Whitening (Dental Bleaching)

Teeth whitening is the process of lightening the color of teeth . The color of tooth enamel changes due to genetics or various reasons. Teeth whitening is the chemical change of chromogens inside the tooth.

It is a cosmetic application in which a solution is applied to the problem by using tooth whitening gels of internal and external discoloration in the enamel structure .

In some teeth, internal discoloration occurs due to genetics and antibiotics used later in some teeth. Daily consumption of food and beverages (tea, coffee, fruit juice, wine) or smoking causes the outer structure of the teeth to become discolored. These factors shade the natural whiteness of our teeth.

Overview about Whitening

Teeth whitening is a procedure that can be performed on healthy and natural teeth. There are two types of bleaching: home type and ın-office type.

In home bleaching, the patient’s measurements are taken and thin plates are prepared. Low concentration peroxide gels are placed inside these plates. It is tried to keep the plaques in the mouth during the night. It is applied for 1 week. It is requested to stay away from colored liquids and cigarettes for a few days after the application period.

Another type of whitening is in-office bleaching. Again, in a mouth of healthy teeth, a gingival barrier is applied to protect the gums. Then gels containing high peroxide are applied on the teeth and whitening is performed. This process is done in 2-3 sessions. Each session is 15 minutes. Colored liquids and dyed tobacco such as cigarettes are avoided for 3-4 days.

Having ideal teeth whiteness is actually not difficult. The discoloration of the teeth can be removed with the bleaching process and you can have whiter teeth.

The teeth whitening process is quite different from the polishing process after the tartar cleaning process. In the teeth whitening process, the own color tone of the tooth can be lightened by 2-3 tons.

The teeth whitening process can be applied as home-type bleaching applied by the patient at home, with office-type bleaching applied by the physician in the office environment and gels containing lower-rate bleaching agents , thanks to a transparent plaque given to the patient with the measurements taken from the patient .

In addition, what we describe as over the counter, which is not under the control of a physician and can be obtained by patients from pharmacies; There are products such as whitening toothpaste and mouthwash . However, the effect of these products is very low compared to the whitening process under the control of a physician. It will be a better choice to use it with the advice of a physician after bleaching under the control of a physician.

Whitening methods can cause sensitivity in the teeth, albeit slightly. This tooth sensitivity; may be against the weather, very hot-cold foods and drinks. This is a normal and expected side effect.

Tooth sensitivity is usually expected to pass within 24-48 hours. When an unexpected situation is encountered, a doctor should be consulted.

It should be known that implant application is risky in certain situations. These situations are;

  • Pregnancy
  • People with high cigarette consumption
  • Alcohol and drug addicts
  • High blood pressure and connective tissue problems
  • Young people with incomplete bone development
  • Diabetes and chronic cardiovascular diseases
  • Those who received high-dose radiotherapy in the head and neck region

Bleaching will open the pores on the surface of the tooth. Therefore, dyes will be more harmful than usual for a few days after bleaching.

The new whitening systems provide minimum sensitivity. Sensitivity will disappear with fluorinated gels.

Every natural tooth whitens to some extent. But everyone’s whitening amount is different. Depending on the permeability of the tooth, some teeth brighten too much.
